Culture of Origin Portrait

Students will create charcoal self portraits with personal culturally tied tile backgrounds made with stencil printmaking techniques . These portraits will allow students to reflect on their cultures of origin, and iconography that can be used to portray such . Students will look at the portrait and sculpture works of Allison Saar, Josephine Tota, Sarah C. Rutherford, Mary Abastenia St. Leger Eberle, Yayoi Kusama, and George Grosz from the MAG,  as well as several famous self portraits throughout history (ex. Frida Kaloh, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, etc.).

Students will learn foundational drawing techniques, charcoal drawing, relief printmaking, symbolism in art, iconography, and principles of design.
